Age, Awareness & Action: Understanding Stroke Risk in All Men

Understanding Stroke Risk in All Men

Stroke Can Strike Suddenly, and for Men, the Risk Is Higher Than Many Realise in Southeast Asia (SEA).

As men get older, the likelihood of experiencing a Stroke increases due to natural changes in blood vessels, long-term lifestyle habits, and chronic conditions such as Hypertension, Diabetes, and High Cholesterol. While age remains one of the strongest risk factors, many strokes are preventable with early action, healthier living, and improved awareness.

In line with #Movember and #Wovember, this article encourages men to look out for one another and take Stroke symptoms seriously. Because when it comes to Stroke, “Time is Brain,” and responding quickly can make all the difference in long-term recovery and survival.

1. Why ageing Men Face Higher Stroke Risk in Southeast Asia

Blood Vessels Age Too

As men grow older, their blood vessels naturally stiffen. This makes blockages more likely, leading to a higher risk of ischemic Stroke, the most common type.

Chronic Conditions Become More Common

Hypertension, Diabetes, and High Cholesterol are far more prevalent among ageing men. These conditions damage blood vessels over time, increasing the chance of a Stroke.

Lifestyle Factors Add Up

Years of smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, high-salt diets, and stress accumulate silently, raising long-term cardiovascular risk.

Men Delay Seeking Help

Studies consistently show that men are more likely to dismiss symptoms or delay visiting a Doctor. That hesitation can cost precious minutes, minutes during which up to 1.9 million brain cells are lost every minute in an untreated major Stroke.

2. Stroke Isn’t Just an “Older Person’s Disease”

Older men are at the highest risk, but younger men are increasingly affected too.

  • Stroke cases among adults under 55 are rising worldwide.
  • In Malaysia, cases among men aged 35–39 have increased noticeably.
  • With 63.1% of Malaysia’s workforce being male, a sudden Stroke can bring emotional, financial, and career challenges for families.

This shift shows that lifestyle habits formed early in life have lifelong consequences, and early prevention matters for men of all ages.

3. Recognising a Stroke: Think F-A-S-T

Quick action saves lives. The FAST test is a simple but powerful way to check for common Stroke symptoms:

  • F — Face: Is one side drooping?
  • A — Arm: Is one arm weak, numb, or unable to lift?
  • S — Speech: Is speech slurred or hard to understand?
  • T — Time: Call emergency services immediately.

Even if you’re unsure, act. It’s always safer to get checked than to wait.

4. Why Every Minute Counts

Modern Stroke treatment can be life-saving, but only when delivered early.

Ischemic Stroke

  • Caused by a blocked blood vessel
  • Treated using Thrombolysis (clot-busting medication)
  • Mechanical Thrombectomy (physically removing the clot)

Haemorrhagic Stroke

  • Caused by a ruptured blood vessel
  • Requires urgent management of bleeding and blood pressure

For both types, the success of treatment depends on one thing, how fast help arrives. Delays reduce treatment options and increase the risk of long-term disability.

5. Prevention, Lifestyle & Healthy Living

You can’t control age or genetics, but many Stroke risk factors remain within your control.

Simple Actions That Make a Big Difference

  • Maintain a healthy weight and stay physically active.
  • Monitor blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol regularly.
  • Quit smoking and reduce alcohol intake.
  • Prioritise a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
  • Schedule routine health screenings, especially if you’re over 40 or have chronic conditions.

Small steps today can build the foundation for stronger cardiovascular health tomorrow.

Moving Forward: Protecting Men’s Health Through Awareness & Action

Stroke risk increases with age, but awareness, prevention, and early action can protect your health, independence, and future. Recognise symptoms early, act FAST, and support the men around you to do the same.
