High bilirubin | Gleneagles Hospitals Malaysia
High bilirubin
What if I have consistently high bilirubin, what does it mean of my health?

Answer:

Dear Sir/Madam,

We extend our sincere gratitude for choosing Gleneagles Hospital Malaysia for your healthcare requirements.

Bilirubin is a yellow compound that occurs in the normal catabolic pathway that breaks down red blood cells. A persistently high bilirubin level may indicate a number of underlying issues, including but not limited to:

  • Liver conditions such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or fatty liver disease
  • Bile duct obstruction, due to gallstones or strictures
  • Hemolytic disorders, which cause increased breakdown of red blood cells
  • Inherited conditions such as Gilbert’s syndrome
  • Tumours or masses in the liver or pancreas that may affect bile flow

We strongly recommend that you undergo a comprehensive medical evaluation to determine the underlying cause of the elevated bilirubin. For this purpose, we suggest a consultation with either a hepatologist (liver specialist) or a hepatobiliary surgeon, both of whom are experienced in diagnosing and managing disorders related to the liver, bile ducts, and pancreas.
