Breastfeeding After Accidental Atorvastatin Intake
My wife accidentally took one dose of Atorvastatin (Rotaqor 10mg) at on Tuesday. Our son is 13 months old and still breastfeeding. How long should she stop breastfeeding to ensure the medication is fully cleared from her system?

Answer:

Dear Sir/Madam,

We extend our sincere gratitude for choosing Gleneagles Hospital Malaysia for your healthcare requirements.

Thank you for contacting us with your concern regarding your wife’s accidental intake of Atorvastatin (Rotaqor 10mg) and its potential impact on breastfeeding. We understand how important it is to ensure the safety of both your wife and your child during this time.

Atorvastatin is a medication commonly used to lower cholesterol levels. While small amounts of atorvastatin may pass into breast milk, it is generally considered to be safe in breastfeeding mothers, especially after a single dose. However, to ensure the safety of your child, it is recommended that breastfeeding be paused for a minimum of 24-48 hours after a single dose of the medication, as this will allow time for the drug to clear from the body.

Given that atorvastatin has a half-life of around 14 hours, the drug would likely be significantly reduced in your wife's system within this timeframe.

Feel free to reach us for further assistance,

Thank you.
