Back pain
Left back pain when trying to lift up left leg while standing. The pain tends to travel down to the back of the thigh. What scan should I do to find the root cause?

Answer:

Hello,

Based on the symptoms you described, it is important to consider the possibility of a disc herniation or sciatica. A common diagnostic imaging test that can help identify the root cause of these symptoms is a lumbar spine MRI. This can provide detailed images of the spinal structures and help determine if there is any nerve compression or disc pathology.

In the meantime, here are some general recommendations to help manage your symptoms:
1. Avoid activities that worsen the pain, including lifting your leg while standing.
2. Apply ice to the affected area for 15-20 minutes a few times a day to help reduce inflammation.
3. Take over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen to help alleviate the pain.
4. Gentle stretching exercises and low-impact activities like walking or swimming may help improve flexibility and strength in the affected area.
5. Consider consulting with a physical therapist for targeted exercises and techniques to address your specific condition.

It's important to follow up with a specialist for a thorough evaluation and appropriate management plan based on the imaging results. If you experience any sudden weakness, numbness, or bladder/bowel changes, seek immediate medical attention as these may be signs of a more serious condition that requires urgent intervention.
