12 major childhood infections are under the immunisation coverage in Malaysia. Below are vaccines given under the National Immunisation Programme in Malaysia.
Vaccine | Description |
BCG (Bacillus Calmette–Guérin) | BCG vaccine is given at birth to give protection against tuberculosis. |
Hepatitis B | Hepatitis B vaccine protects against infection that causes inflammation and chronic liver damage. |
DTap | DTap is a combination of vaccines to protect against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (whooping cough). |
Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) | Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) vaccine protects against infection in the lungs (pneumonia) and brain membrane inflammation (meningitis). |
Polio vaccine (IPV) | Polio vaccine (IPV) protects against poliovirus that causes paralysis due to infection in the brain. |
MMR | MMR is a combination of vaccines to protect against measles, mumps, and rubella. |
Human papillomavirus (HPV) | Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine protects against cervical cancer in girls. |
JE | JE vaccine protects against Japanese Encephalitis, a viral infection spread by mosquito bites that cause brain damage. This vaccine is only provided in Sarawak. |
Pneumococcal vaccine (PCV) | Pneumococcal vaccine (PCV) protects against infection caused by the bacteria Streptococcus pneumonia that spreads via respiratory droplets. |
