Refractive Surgery (LASIK)

Any type of surgery conducted to correct refractive errors in vision is called Refractive Surgery. If any errors are present, an individual will not be able to clearly focus their eye and require glasses or contact lenses. The most common errors are:

Myopia (short-sightedness) — Difficulty in seeing distant objects clearly
Hyperopia (long-sightedness) — Difficulty in seeing close objects clearly
Astigmatism — Distorted vision resulting from an irregularly curved cornea
Presbyopia — Age-related difficulty in reading or seeing close objects clearly

Typical Refractive Surgery makes use of a laser to correct the shape of the cornea and correct any errors in visual. LASIK is the abbreviation of the surgical procedure (Laser-assisted In Situ Keratomileusis).
