Accident & Emergency Department

Gleneagles Hospital Kota Kinabalu ’s Accident & Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day and well-equipped to handle any injury/ medical emergency, round-the-clock every day. At the A&E, the dedicated team of doctors and nurses are specially trained for emergency situations. They will evaluate the situation immediately using the triage method. The most severe cases with life-threatening conditions will be our topmost priority, while the rest may need a 30-minute wait, depending on the number of patients at the A&E.

In addition to having a team of emergency specialists assessing and managing your case, a multidisciplinary team of specialists and surgeons are also on call to attend to complex medical conditions.

Triage & Waiting Time

The triage system is to categorise patient base on urgency.

The triage system is used to sort patients into categories so those with urgent medical needs get help first.

The assessment is based on how sick a patient is upon arrival at the emergency.

An overview of three category triage acuity systems:

Red Zone (CRITICAL)

  • Acuity

    • Require immediate life or limb saving intervention

  • Recommended reassesment

    • Immediate attention

  • Example

    • - Cardiopulmonary arrest, severe respiratory distress, unresponsive collapsed patient
    - severe arrhythmias with signs of hypoperfusion and hypotension
    - severe trauma related patient
    - Acute Heart Attack
    - Acute Stroke

Yellow Zone (High Risk/ Semi Critical)

  • Acuity

    • Requires urgent intervention

  • Recommended reassesment

    • Less than 30 Minutes

  • Example

    • - Altered conscious level, severe head injury
    - Seizures
    - Fractures of long bones of lower limbs/pelvis etc.
    - Open fractures
    - Major bleeding
    - Burns
    - Severe dehydration
    - Severe Pain (Chest or Abdomen)
    - Pregnancy related problems

Green Zone (NON-CRITICAL)

    Green Zone 3 Requires attention

    Less than 90 Minutes


    Green Zone 4 Require 1 resource

    Less than 90 Minutes


    Green Zone 5 Non-emergency

    Less than 90 Minutes

    • - Children less than 2 years, senior citizens more than 65 years (Priority)
    - Respiratory infections
    - Gastrointestinal infections
    - Urinary/ Genital infections
    - Minor soft tissue injuries or infections

      • 1When should I go to the Accident & Emergency Department?

          If you or your loved one is facing any pain/discomfort or any forms of emergencies, you are strongly advised to seek urgent/immediate attention at our emergency department as soon as possible.

      • 2What types of emergencies are handled by the Accident & Emergency Department?

          The Emergency department handles all forms of medical, surgical, pediatric, obstetric/ gynecological, orthopedic emergencies. Please refer to our triage list of emergencies.

      • 1When is the best time to visit the Emergency department?

          Our emergency department is operational 24 hours everyday. If the need or emergency arises please seek urgent medical attention.

      • 2What can I expect when arriving at the Emergency department?

          All our patients will be triaged immediately and according to the severity and urgency of the condition they present, they will be attended by our trained healthcare professionals.

      • 3Who will I see in the Emergency department?

          All our patients will be attended by a Triage Nurse and later examined by a A&E Trained Doctor.

      • 4How long do I need to wait to see a doctor?

          Every A&E in Pantai Group follows ESI( Emergency Severity Index)

          Patients are Triaged accordingly to severity of their medical problems

          Green Zone : 90 minutes

          Yellow Zone: 30 minutes

          Red Zone : Immediately

      • 5Can I bring my child to be treated at the Accident & Emergency department?

          Yes, of course

      • 6When does doctor decide to admit a patient?

          When the patient needs further treatment and management care for their medical problem/condition. This is according to the Speciality of the required medical condition.

      • 7What are the admission process?

          Depends if it’s through self-paying or using company/personal/travel insurance, GL etc.

      • 8Why do you keep a patient under observation instead of admitting them?

          Patients that are critically ill with Life threatening conditions needs urgent resuscitation and close monitoring. Its imperative to keep them under close observations and monitoring until they are stable for admission.
          These ill patients may deteriorate rapidly if not kept for close observation after the initial resuscitation.

      • 1Will I be able to receive medical treatment if my insurance provider does not cover me?

          Yes, of course you can receive the treatment / procedure as required. However this would be considered as self pay - cash payment upon completion of treatment/services.

      • 2What are the payment procedure at the Accident & Emergency department?

          We do accept payment by cash /credit card upon discharge.
