Gleneagles Hospital Kota Kinabalu’s Accident & Emergency Department is open 24 hours a day and well-equipped to handle any trauma or medical emergency, round-the-clock every day. A dedicated team of doctors, nurses, and support staff are trained to manage urgent and life-threatening conditions with care, speed, and expertise.

Triage & Waiting Time

The triage system is to categorise patient base on urgency.

The triage system is used to sort patients into categories so those with urgent medical needs get help first.

The assessment is based on how sick a patient is upon arrival at the emergency.

An overview of three category triage acuity systems:

Red Zone (CRITICAL)

  • Acuity
  • Require immediate life or limb saving intervention

  • Recommended reassesment
  • Immediate attention

  • Example
  • - Cardiopulmonary arrest, severe respiratory distress, unresponsive collapsed patient
    - severe arrhythmias with signs of hypoperfusion and hypotension
    - severe trauma related patient
    - Acute Heart Attack
    - Acute Stroke

Yellow Zone (High Risk/ Semi Critical)

  • Acuity
  • Requires urgent intervention

  • Recommended reassesment
  • Less than 30 Minutes

  • Example
  • - Altered conscious level, severe head injury
    - Seizures
    - Fractures of long bones of lower limbs/pelvis etc.
    - Open fractures
    - Major bleeding
    - Burns
    - Severe dehydration
    - Severe Pain (Chest or Abdomen)
    - Pregnancy related problems

Green Zone (NON-CRITICAL)

    Green Zone 3 Requires attention

    Less than 90 Minutes


    Green Zone 4 Require 1 resource

    Less than 90 Minutes


    Green Zone 5 Non-emergency

    Less than 90 Minutes


  • Example
  • - Children less than 2 years, senior citizens more than 65 years (Priority)
    - Respiratory infections
    - Gastrointestinal infections
    - Urinary/ Genital infections
    - Minor soft tissue injuries or infections
    - Eyes, Ears, Nose, Face injuries or infections
    - Minor Trauma (short/small bone fractures/ dislocations)
