Dato’ Dr. Lai is a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreo-retinal Surgeon. He graduated from the medical faculty of University of Malaya and obtained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh in 1985 and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in UK in 1990.

He was formerly Associate Professor and Head of Department of Ophthalmology at University of Malaya and was responsible for setting up the postgraduate Masters of Ophthalmology Course there.

He is an examiner for undergraduate ophthalmology for the Penang Medical College and is still active in postgraduate teaching in Penang.

He is a principal investigator for multicentre trials on lens implants and glaucoma, and has published peer reviewed articles.
